While private label is not expected to emerge as a major player in cheese before the end of the forecast period, the expanding range of private label cheese that is available on retail shelves, including value-added products and a diverse range of packaging presentations, makes it inevitable that sales of private label cheese will continue to rise from a low base. As with all of the category’s leading brands, it is expected that all of this private label cheese will be locally produced and this means that consumers will be familiar with the product variants on offer in the private label.
At the end of the review period, retail sales of cheese were evenly split between three distribution channels: hypermarkets, supermarkets and small local grocers, a channel which in the Dominican Republic is dominated by neighbourhood grocery stores known as colmados. While the general trends in recent years have been away from colmados and towards supermarkets and hypermarkets, there is a strong chance that this trend could be reversed during the forecast period as the pressure that has come on household budgets due to high inflation encourages consumers to adopt a more conservative approach to their food spending.
While high inflation is expected to continue putting substantial pressure on household spending in the Dominican Republic throughout the first half of the forecast period, undermining demand for cheese generally, the rising cost of living and tightened household budgets could in fact be positive for retail sales of cheese. As discretionary expenditure is curbed by households feeling the pinch due to price inflation, it is likely that many consumers will forgo dining out on a regular basis in order to save money.
