Retail volume sales of cheese are expected to register a moderate increase in 2021. Retail current value is also expected to rise, but will partly be driven by hefty price increases.
Madeta and Savencia Fromage & Dairy Czech Republic will maintain their leading positions in cheese in retail value terms in 2021. Madeta will managed to retain its lead thanks to its continued lead in hard cheese, which is the largest cheese product area in both volume and value terms, whilst Savencia will continue to lead soft cheese.
Packaged hard cheese is expected to continue showing the most dynamic current value growth. It has benefited from the pandemic, as the key retail distributors of packaged hard cheese remained open.
Cheese will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period and as during the review period, hard cheese will be the strongest performer, followed by soft cheese, with spreadable cheese bringing up the rear. The economic fallout of the pandemic is expected to persist over the forecast period and this will be coupled with rising retail prices, due to higher energy and packaging costs.
Czechs love to barbecue and this has driven a growing trend for grilling camembert cheese and over the forecast period, this trend is expected to extend to other types of cheese, including hard cheese. Recent launches include hard cheese Liptov Poloostiepok na gril from Savencia Fromage & Dairy Czech Republic, soft cheese such as President Cheese Steak by Lactalis CZ and Milko Smoked Cheese Stick by Polabske mlekarny.
The younger generation is cutting down on meat consumption and this will benefit cheese, as an alternative source of protein. Cheese producers are aware of this and are coming up with innovative and convenient ways of using cheese in cooking.
