Processed cheese has struggled to maintain demand since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many consumers regarding these products as artificial and therefore inherently unhealthy. However, the return to on-the-go lifestyles during the post-COVID-19 era has the potential to support rising consumer interest in processed cheese in convenient formats such as individually wrapped sticks, wedges, cubes and mini-wheels.
Increasing consumer concern over the negative of implications of excessive meat consumption and, moreover, disquiet over the ecological implications of sheep, cattle, pig and poultry farming and industrial-scale meat production have the potential to support demand for cheese over the forecast period. This is because, in absence of meat and poultry, it is likely that many consumers will turn to cheese as a source of high-quality protein.
While e-commerce remained a small and relatively insignificant retail distribution channel for cheese at the end of the review period, it is believed that there will be strong growth seen in online sales of cheese, with this growth set to be driven by both Denmark’s leading chained supermarkets and hypermarkets and various third party e-commerce players, as well as the category’s leading brands. For instance, major chained grocery retailer Coop is set to continue investing in the further development of its click-and-collect service after 2021 saw it install a nationwide network of temperature-controlled collection lockers, which enable consumers to collect their online grocery orders from a location convenient to them, ensuring that all perishable foodstuffs, including cheese, are maintained at the appropriate storage temperatures.
