Sales of chocolate confectionery in Costa Rica are remaining robust throughout the time of COVID-19, with both 2020 and 2021 showing healthy growth which is only a little lower than seen in the recent review period, pre-pandemic. This is because many consumers are turning to chocolate confectionery for comfort eating, when feeling stressed and spending more time at home, thus increasing snacking occasions.
In 2021, the main focus on innovation is being directed towards chocolate bars (tablets), alongside bags and pouches. These are often targeted to more mature consumers through affordable and indulgent proposals, alongside functional claims.
Cooperativa de Productos de Leche Dos Pinos, RL is maintaining its lead in chocolate confectionery in 2021, thanks to the success of its top Gallito brand. Global player Mars Costa Rica SRL comes in second place, with its Snickers brand, alongside M&M's and Milky Way.
Despite chocolate confectionery faring quite well during the time of the pandemic, full recovery will be attributed to the overall economic performance in Costa Rica over the forecast period. This will also be linked to a return to pre-pandemic lifestyles, with social gatherings, tourism, a return to workplaces and educational institutions, plus other activities stimulating impulse purchases within chocolate confectionery.
The growth in e-commerce looks set to benefit chocolate confectionery over the forecast period, with both mass and niche proposals making use of online selling platforms to communicate directly with customers, thus enabling both the promotion of premium offers and to tempt a wider base of mid-income consumers with value-for-money promotions on traditional products.
There are also opportunities for further development in regional cacao claims, as well as varieties, thus following the sustainability, gourmet and artisan trends. In particular, this strategy works well for local producer, as seen with Sibu.
