Other hot drinks in Spain recorded a negative performance in the last three years of the review period, with the main consumers being mostly children. Despite concerns about the category’s high sugar content and with most adults only drinking the beverage occasionally, children remain the key demographic group and it is popular for breakfast and as an indulgent beverage.
Healthy living is a trend that is thriving in Spain, reshaping nutritional patterns and thereby affecting consumption of other hot drinks. The increasing health consciousness of consumers and growing concerns over the consumption of sugar-rich beverages is leading to a further decline for this category, which is set to persist over the forecast period, as consumers’ preferences move away from products that do not have health benefits.
Chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks remained the most popular category in 2018 and should continue to be so over the forecast period. The introduction of the much-debated sugar tax in Catalonia in 2017, which imposed levies on all products containing added sugar, is expected to favour consumers’ shift towards reduced fat and reduced sugar options.
Nutrexpa SL and Nestlé España led hot drinks in Spain in 2018. Both players hold strong positions due to their popularity, strong client base and product recognition through brands such as the leader’s chocolate-based flavoured powder drink Cola Cao and Nestlé’s brand Nesquik.
The health and wellness trend, in addition to the new tax on sugar products in Catalonia, favoured the launch of new products able to appeal to health-conscious consumers. Nestlé carried out the most recent product launch with Nesquik 30% less sugar.
The leading brands of other hot drinks in 2018 remained Nutrexpa’s Cola-Cao, Nestlé’s Nesquik and Mercadona’s Hacendado (private label). These products dominate the category and their positions are unlikely to change in the near future.
