Chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks continues to account for most sales of other hot drinks in Colombia, with these products largely targeted at children. Unlike coffee and tea, other hot drinks saw little innovation towards the end of the review period with the leading players instead focused on marketing their existing products.
One way that leading brands such as Milo and Nesquik have looked to drive sales is by positioning products as supporting younger consumers in their development and sport and study activities. Milo, for example, promotes its Activ-Go formula which includes a unique combination of malted barley, vitamins and minerals which it claims provide an optimum release of energy throughout the day.
Another way in which brands have looked to stand out when it comes to other hot drinks is through new packaging, while changes to product formulas has also been noted. For example, products with a more intense chocolate flavour or different textures, such as crunchy, have been seen in chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks.
Cía Nacional de Chocolates SA retained the lead in other hot drinks in 2019 with it offering the popular Corona, Choco Listo, Diana and Bogotano brands. The company continues to focus on providing convenient and tasty products within chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks, such as its Corona Flash line which can be prepared in seconds.
Nestlé de Colombia SA remained a close second in the rankings in 2019 thanks to the popularity of its Milo and Nesquik brands. Although the product ranges offered under these brands saw little change at the end of the review period the company did focus on new packaging and social media marketing to help drive demand.
Other plant-based hot drinks remains somewhat of a niche category with sales largely accounted for by Alimentos Polar de Colombia SA with its Quaker Avena and Frescavena Quaker brands. These brands offer a range of oat-based products which appeal to consumers looking for a filling and nutritious hot drinks option.
