The lockdown caused by the spread of COVID-19 led to the closure of schools throughout Chile, as well as the closure of foodservice outlets. These factors have negatively impacted on-trade sales of other hot drinks in 2020, seeing a strong volume decline.
Despite seeing an off-trade volume decline in 2020, other plant-based hot drinks has remained the largest category within other hot drinks. The main product in Chile is yerba mate, which is a traditional drink in the south of Latin America and in Patagonia.
Malt-based hot drink Milo still leads overall other hot drinks in both volume and value terms in 2020, and has increased its shares. It has broad penetration both in modern and traditional distribution channels, which has helped the brand during the lockdown restrictions.
The on-trade channel is set to return to volume growth in other hot drinks in 2021, and continue to increase throughout the forecast period. Nevertheless, sales are not expected to reach the level seen in 2019, before the pandemic hit, at any point in the forecast period.
Flavoured powder drinks, which was contracting historically, is expected to find value growth through premiumisation in the forecast period, as there will be more stay at-home occasions, caused by new ways of working and the residual effect of the pandemic, which will continue to lead people to buy larger packages in the medium-term. However, as school classes are set to return in 2021, it is expected that these products will once again suffer competition from RTD flavoured milk drinks, given their on-the-go convenience and the availability of high protein and lactose-free products.
During the pandemic, many imported products suffered heavily from supply-chain disruption. However, within other plant-based hot drinks, the leading product, yerba mate, was able to avoid seeing major out-of-stock problems, given that neighbouring country Argentina is the country’s major supplier.
