The COVID-19 pandemic continued to have a positive impact on the retail consumption of chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks as well as on sales of other hot drinks categories during the first half of 2021 with government restrictions remaining in place until May. Chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks are mainly drunk by children and teenagers.
Within other plant-based hot drinks, leading player Nestlé Cesko chose to discontinue its less profitable brand Ricoré Caro to focus more on its more popular brand Caro. The Caro brand increased its stronghold in other plant-based hot drinks in 2021 absorbing Ricoré Caro’s share.
Private label picked up further share in other hot drinks in 2021 as more households started to demonstrate price sensitivity due to the challenging economic environment. Nevertheless, branded products retained the leading positions thanks to frequent price promotions continuing to be introduced online and in store-based retailers and many Czech households were still willing to spend a bit extra on the quality offered by branded products.
Functional variants accounted for the vast majority products sold in chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks in 2021. This trend will likely continue and become more important over the forecast period with the COVID-19 pandemic having led to increased health concerns.
Other plant-based hot drinks should see a positive impact from the developing wellness trend in the country over the forecast period. During the COVID-19 pandemic companies were careful with introducing new products and there was weak marketing support and a lack of innovation in the category.
Malt-based hot drinks continued to see negligible sales in 2021 due to limited demand and a limited offer of products. Instant drink Ovomaltine is the most visible brand of malt-based hot drinks in the country but it has received relatively weak support in terms of marketing and distribution.
