New players continued to invest in chocolate spreads towards the end of the review period, with Bonne Maman and Carambar both entering the market in 2021. Andros’ Bonne Maman was quick to establish a strong footing in the market, taking up third place in the rankings, although other new entrants have not fared so well.
Organic products are seeing declining interest in jams and preserves as consumers find the higher prices to be too much for the perceived benefits. In general it appears that the more processed the product, the more the consumer is unsure of the benefits.
The uncertainty of recent fruit and nut harvests are likely to contribute to an increase in the price of sweet spreads, at least in the early part of the forecast period. Hazelnuts in particular are increasingly vulnerable as 70% of the world’s supply comes from Turkey, where harvests are suffering from aging orchards, poor farming practices and soil erosion, as well as heatwaves and severe storms.
