Sweet spreads sees an overall increase in retail value sales growth during 2021, benefitting from the pandemic. Demand for honey rises thanks to its natural characteristic of immune support, while chocolate spreads, jams and preserves as well as nut and seed based spreads benefit from most Ukrainians consuming breakfast at home and using these as an indulgence.
Players and retailers of sweet spreads are increasingly importing more exotic flavours and sophisticated jam combinations, challenging the sale of traditional jams such as raspberry, strawberry and apple. For example, the modern grocery retailer Silpo is importing the southern European brand Helios that have jams such as mango as well as bitter oranges marmalade, Sonty’s (Kompaniya Prosvit LTD TOV) feijoa jam, and large local producer Agroekoprodukt ZAT’s Veres brand with a pumpkin and orange jam.
Modern grocery retailers are increasingly launching private label sweet spreads as well as importing these products themselves to make sweet spreads more affordable. For example, ATB-Market launched its private label, Svoya Liniya, in jam and honey, whereas Silpo from the Fozzy Group introduced its chocolate spread Riki Tiki and nut and seed based spread Premiya during the review period.
Constant retail value sales of honey are forecast to fall in 2022 and see modest sales growth over the rest of the forecast period. Nonetheless, sales of honey is anticipated to be supported by consumers that are currently buying artisanal honey or honey from open markets shifting their purchases to modern grocery retailers as brand names and brand awareness are becoming increasingly important.
Ukrainian consumers are becoming more aware of their health and wellness, leading to reduced sugar and organic jams and preserves. Consequently, demand for health-positioned jams and preserves is expected to rise during the forecast period.
Nuts and seed based spreads is a relatively newcomer to sweet spreads in Ukraine and is expected to remain niche with limited awareness during the forecast period. Nuts and seed based spreads currently have restricted availability and relatively high prices.
