PROSPECTS
Jams and preserves still seeing new products and pack types

The main flavours of jams and preserves in Ukraine continue to be raspberry, strawberry and apple. These flavours are traditional and familiar to all Ukrainians, as they remind them of childhood toppings and home-made pastries.

Nut- and seed-based spreads benefiting from widening distribution and local production

Nut- and seed-based spreads are expected to continue showing stable strong growth. This is being helped by a growing choice, including peanut, sesame, cashew, almond and hazelnut, rising local manufacturing by small companies, widening availability and increasing visibility in recent years.

Honey enjoys greater variety thanks to new product launches

Honey benefits from all sales in packaged food being natural healthy products, lending honey a good product image and helping to tap into health and wellness trends. Alongside the traditional pure honey products on offer, players are also introducing interesting new additives, for example cranberry or dried apricots from McDay, grapefruit/lemon juice from Medodar, or with seeds and nuts from Eco-Medok.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Domestic production meets Ukraine’s honey needs

Ukraine is one of the biggest honey producers in the world. Despite the fact that a large proportion of industrially-produced honey goes to export, the remaining share fully meets local consumer demand.

Local player Gaisynsky Konservny Kombinat offering sugar-free jams and preserves

Jams and preserves is highly fragmented in Ukraine with a large number of small local companies present at a regional level. However, some companies such as Agroekoprodukt (Veres), Mogyliv-Podilsky Konservny Zavod (Dary Laniv) and Odesky Konservny Zavod (Gospodarochka) successfully operate on a national level, with these three players between them accounting for more than a quarter of total retail value sales.

Could Chumak’s new product challenge Ferrero’s dominance in chocolate spreads?

Local manufacturer Chumak, a well-known local maker of sauces, launched a new product development similar to an on-the-go consumption format of Nutella. It could represent a challenge to Ferrero’s dominance in chocolate spreads as the Chumak product is almost twice as cheap as Nutella.
