However, stricter controls with regard to hospital admissions when COVID-19 first hit the region in 2020 meant that patients who did not need urgent treatment were not being admitted to hospitals, which saw growth slow somewhat in 2020, before returning to a slightly stronger level in 2021, if still a little below the performances seen over the pre-pandemic years in the review period.
Kimberly-Clark Taiwan continues to lead sales in AFH tissue and hygiene. This is due to its extensive partnership with high-end department stores and restaurants across the country.
AFH tissue is expected to return to recording positive growth rates from 2022. While 2021 saw an improvement in the AFH tissue performance, sales were still falling.
Taiwan’s national government operates a centralised procurement website, with databases including procurement details from all levels of government departments and government-run institutions, such as hospitals, schools, universities and businesses. Contracts are typically signed for periods that cover one to three years and can be extended if all parties are happy with the existing contract.
As in retail tissue and hygiene, the AFH channel is also expected to remain mostly in the hands of international players. These players appeal through strong brand influence from the retail channel, while they also benefit from lower customised packaging costs thanks to the support of their financially resourceful parent companies, which often have considerable global market coverage.
