After the massive disruption to sales of AFH tissue and hygiene products during 2020 due to the closure of foodservice, and travel restrictions across the world, 2021 seemed to be set to be a year of full recovery. However, this was not the case for several reasons.
The level of decline in AFH tissue and hygiene in 2020 depended on the individual category and the relevant channel. For instance, AFH tablecloths, and to a lesser extent AFH napkins, saw strong volume and current value declines in this year, as horeca is the dominant channel for these products, as they are mainly used in restaurants/hotels.
AFH hygiene saw volume and current value growth in 2021, and even saw slightly higher increases than in 2019. AFH adult incontinence is the only category within AFH hygiene, and more such products were needed due to the dramatic increase in hospital admissions of elderly people due to COVID-19.
The 2020 decline in overall AFH tissue and hygiene was short-lived, as a return to current value growth was seen in 2021, and this is expected to continue throughout the forecast period. However, whilst AFH hygiene is set to see solid CAGRs in both volume and current value terms, AFH tissue is predicted to see slightly slower increases.
Further growth is expected for AFH hygiene in the forecast period, which encompasses only AFH adult incontinence. The ageing population and the rising number of elderly people are expected to contribute to growth.
Volume and current value sales of AFH wipers rebounded in 2021, and this is expected to be followed by steady if unremarkable growth in the forecast period. Positive growth in AFH wipers through business/industry and horeca is likely to be offset by a fall in sales of AFH wipers through hospitals/healthcare as the impact of pandemic subsides.
