Generally, AFH tissue and its various categories saw steep declines in 2020, when the pandemic first hit Spain, before recovering with positive growth in 2021, albeit not as strong as the declines seen a year earlier in volume terms. The emergence of COVID-19 in the country in the first quarter of 2020 naturally had a major impact on many parts of the AFH channel due to the lockdowns, foodservice closures and other restrictions imposed by the government to try and stop the spread of the virus.
The horeca channel recorded a much better performance in 2021, as, despite still being affected by COVID-19 restrictions, it was much closer to working normally than in the previous year, benefiting from the summer opening-up to foreign and local tourists. The situation was generally more relaxed with regard to COVID-19 restrictions until the end of the year, when some measures were reintroduced as a result of a spike in cases due a new variant of the virus.
Somewhat surprisingly, sales of AFH tissue products to hospitals/healthcare were negatively affected by COVID-19. These institutions saw demand increase due to COVID-19 during the first wave of the virus in the first half of the year.
Both AFH tissue and AFH hygiene are expected to see positive volume and current value growth rates throughout the forecast period. Prices increases due to rising raw material, energy and logistics costs are expected in the first few years of the forecast period, helping to drive current value growth.
After the COVID-19 restrictions end and a return to normality is seen, horeca channels will resume their growth. Habits seen when outlets were open during the health crisis will persist, including the widespread use of tissue products and wipes to maintain hygiene.
Sustainability is expected to become an increasingly important topic in AFH tissue and hygiene over the forecast period. Although this was a trend seen towards the end of the review period, COVID-19 has accelerated this, as both individuals and companies have reassessed their priorities and gained a renewed interest in all things related to environmental protection.
