With the exception of AFH paper towels, which was the only product to record a positive performance in 2020, all other away-from-home categories were significantly affected by the closure of non-essential businesses and institutions in response to the pandemic.
The cleaning habits of the population intensified at the beginning of the pandemic, especially in terms of constant washing of hands, and therefore businesses and institutions also took great care to ensure stringent cleaning routines were firmly established and adhered to. This was essential in order to obtain authorisation from the authorities to return to their activities, and also to generate trust amongst visitors, including both personnel and the public.
Peru’s health system initially focused its efforts on treating patients infected with the virus when cases of the pandemic surge. This resulted in the delay and suspension of other services such as outpatient consultations, which did not begin to resume until the second half of 2020.
With the exception of AFH paper towels, which remained above pre-pandemic levels in 2021 but is predicted to record the slowest volume growth over the forecast period, all other areas of away-from-home tissue and hygiene are expected to see a gradual recovery to 2019 volume sales levels by 2026. Predictions for this recovery are based on the return to normal activities by businesses and various institutions, which would mean that restrictions on capacity are minimal, in addition to normalising of activities by schools and universities and the return to the workplace such as offices by employees.
Businesses and institutions are increasingly valuing the performance capabilities and perceived benefits of different away-from-home products. In this sense, varieties of toilet paper and paper towels offered by most players offer high footage per roll and/or packs featuring a number of rolls, which means cost savings for customers because they are able to buy volume at competitive prices.
One of the most relevant customers of AFH tissue products is horeca, especially for napkins, and to a lesser extent for wipers, paper towels and toilet paper. The pandemic significantly affected this channel due to the lockdown and capacity restrictions, and therefore also affected the consumption of these products, especially of napkins and boxed facial tissues.
