Away-from-home tissue and hygiene was the worst affected category within tissue and hygiene in 2020 as COVID-19 led to decreasing demand for consumer foodservice and a lack of tourism in the country. With many restaurants being closed and offering only takeaway services, the need for AFH paper towels, AFH wipers, AHF napkins, and AFH toilet paper has been greatly reduced, leading to heavy volume declines in 2020.
International borders in Malaysia will remain shut at least until end of the year and are set to remain closed well into 2021. This has put great pressure on hotels and related services as they have had to operate at a severely reduced occupancy rate (estimated to be one fifth of what the country would usually expect) and rely solely on domestic tourists.
Away-from-home hygiene, represented by AFH adult incontinence, was one of only a couple of categories in away-from-home tissue and hygiene to see growth in 2020, as Malaysia’s ongoing move towards an ageing population (over 65 years) continued to support sales. In addition, the higher number of patients being admitted to hospital during the pandemic (for COVID-19 and other related reasons), also contributed to the increased demand in 2020.
COVID-19 is not expected to have a long-term impact on the performance of away-from-home tissue and hygiene in Malaysia. While overall away-from-home tissue is predicted to record a slower performance over the forecast period in volume terms than in the review period, this is mainly due to potential of further lockdowns and consumers opting to remain at home more often whilst the virus is still a threat.
Hotels are expected to face a tough time well into the forecast period or at least until vaccines are more widely available, as the Malaysian government will continue to set restrictions on international borders, though some of these are due to be lifted in 2021. Domestic travel restrictions will be reinstated if further waves of the virus emerge.
Over the forecast period, AFH adult incontinence is expected to continue recording strong volume growth in comparison with the review period. However, this performance is more likely to be linked to the country’s ageing population than with COVID-19, as an increasing number of people will require institutional care.
