After seeing solid growth rates throughout the review period, AFH tissue and hygiene turned to decline in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19. However, the impact differed between categories.
Meanwhile, the drop in travel and tourism activities as a result of COVID-19-related travel restrictions both in the Dominican Republic and abroad resulted in declining in demand for AFH tissue products, as tourism is a major contributor to sales of such products. In addition, demand from businesses fell as more people worked from home to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Similar to its strong performance in retail tissue, Kimberly-Clark retained its lead in AFH tissue and hygiene in 2020. Over many years, the company has enjoyed very solid commercial relationships with major AFH customers, and has also benefited from key distribution agreements that allow efficient and timely delivery of its products across an expansive geographic area.
After a poor performance in 2020, AFH tissue and hygiene is expected to see a slight rebound in current value terms in 2021, with similar growth maintained for AFH hygiene, and AFH tissue returning to growth in all categories. However, a return to the level of sales seen in 2019 is not expected in this year.
Stronger and rising current value growth rates are expected for the rest of the forecast period for AFH tissue and hygiene, as economies recover globally, rising consumer confidence is seen, and tourists start to return to the country. Growth rates are set to return to levels similar to those seen in the review period, and a return to the pre-COVID-19 level of sales, seen in 2019, is expected in 2023.
In preparation for recovery, AFH players will have to spend considerable time and energy managing their fluctuating operating costs and resolving any stock issues that may have arisen as a result of the pandemic. Generally, with considerable resources and a greater ability to negotiate effectively with commercial and institutional customers, large international players will continue to have a firm grip on value share in AFH tissue and hygiene as the economy opens up.
