AFH tissue and hygiene maintains a good performance in 2018

AFH tissue and hygiene achieved dynamic growth in current value terms in 2018, with a slightly higher pace of growth compared with 2017. The performance of the Czech economy remained strong and the unemployment rate decreased further, to reach a very low level in 2018.

AFH hygiene performs better in volume terms than in value terms

Whilst growth in AFH tissue was driven mainly by better economic developments in the country, AFH hygiene benefited from the ageing of the population and the growing number of patients in healthcare facilities at the end of the review period. Whilst volume sales in AFH adult incontinence saw healthy growth (driven by the rising consumer base), the category registered a less dynamic increase in current value terms in 2018.

AFH paper towels, wipers and toilet paper drive sales in AFH tissue

Although all categories in AFH tissue saw growth in both volume and current value terms in 2018, the strongest growth was seen by AFH paper towels, AFH wipers and AFH toilet paper. Growth in all these categories was driven by growing demand thanks to the healthy performance of away-from-home facilities at the end of the review period.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Strong multinationals continue to dominate AFH tissue and hygiene

The competitive landscape in AFH tissue and hygiene remained stable in 2018, with strong multinationals dominating. All players operating in retail adult incontinence also compete successfully in AFH hygiene, including Essity Czech Republic, Hartmann-Rico, Untraco, Ontex and Kimberly-Clark.

The presence of domestic players and private label remains weak

The presence of domestic players in AFH tissue and hygiene remains weak, with only a limited number of operators in 2018. Amongst the successful Czech companies in 2018 were Melitrade with an offer of AFH toilet paper, paper towels, wipes and napkins under its Linteo brand, and Lorika with an offer of AFH toilet paper, paper towels and wipers.
