Away-from-home (AFH) tissue and hygiene continued to perform well in 2019, with total current value sales growing at a healthy pace and most product categories posting robust growth in volume terms. The expansion of AFH tissue was underpinned by favourable economic conditions in the Czech Republic, with low unemployment and rising disposable incomes supporting higher consumer spending on foodservice and out-of-home leisure activities, including domestic tourism.
AFH adult incontinence was the most dynamic category in volume and current value growth terms in 2019. This was mainly due to population ageing, which ensured the number of patients in nursing homes and similar healthcare facilities continued to rise.
Multinationals continued to dominate AFH tissue and hygiene in 2019 thanks to reputable brands, wide distribution coverage and high levels of customer service. All the top multinationals also held strong positions in retail tissue and hygiene categories.
AFH tissue value sales at constant 2019 prices are now expected to decline by 5% in 2020 in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to a 2019 constant value growth rate of 1% projected in Euromonitor International’s 2020 edition of tissue and hygiene published in February 2020 (pre-COVID-19).
All AFH tissue categories are expected to see volume and current value sales decline sharply in 2020. AFH tablecloths looks set to post the steepest declines in both respects, as it is among the categories most exposed to disruption in the horeca channel.
While much will depend on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant economic fallout, AFH tissue and hygiene is expected to perform reasonably well over the forecast period as a whole. Most categories look set to see demand stabilise from 2021 onwards, though the pace of recovery will vary in accordance with their exposure to new regulations on social distancing, recent shifts in consumer behaviour, disruption to travel and tourism etc.
