Due to the long-lasting COVID-19 pandemic, beer consumption in 2021 had a good performance with an increase in home consumption. Home consumption continued to revitalise, driven by COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing, and home seclusion.
Domestic mid-priced lager fuelled beer’s incremental volume growth in 2021 thanks to the value-priced positioning of local beer brands. Price sensitivity remained significant for 2021, therefore an aggressive price strategy was evident in the year.
Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana has been unable to keep up with the new demand for the product amid troubles in the global supply chain producing a lack of product availability. The international shortage of glass bottles and the low local turnaround of used bottles due to COVID-19 deepened the problem.
The global wellness trend amongst millennials may facilitate the entrance of non/low alcohol beer in the forecast period. Indeed, the trend emerged in the Dominican Republic towards the end of 2020 as some major importers and producers launched new products with less alcohol, such as Presidente Golden Light which was introduced by Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana in December 2020.
Total volume sales of beer are expected to increase during the forecast period. Despite the economic crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift in consumer behaviour, the premiumisation trend is predicted to continue to expand over the period to 2026 as consumers are used to high-quality flavours and new consumption occasions.
In the forecast period, an increase in craft beer consumption is expected as consumers were limited in their access to beer speciality bars due to the COVID-19 curfew. In addition, during the pandemic, many small distributors of alcoholic drinks used social media to promote themselves and showcase these more “rare” options which are now available via e-commerce and with home delivery.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
