In 2021, on-trade volume sales of beer recovered as foodservice establishments reopened in the second quarter of the year. However, some pandemic-related restrictions remained in place, such as reduced opening hours and the requirement to show a pass to demonstrate COVID-19 status.
Non/low alcohol beer is becoming increasingly popular in Slovenia, and low alcohol beer was one of the categories seeing healthy positive growth during 2021. Most top players, such as Pivovarna Laško Union (Laško, Union and Heineken brands), have launched low or 0.
Pivovarna Laško Union doo maintained its significant lead in beer in 2021. As a giant in alcoholic drinks in Slovenia, the company overwhelmingly dominates beer overall, with an uncontested reign throughout lager – across both domestic and imported lager and most price segments.
The on-trade channel is expected to return to historic positive growth norms from 2022-2023. As the economy recovers, Slovenian preferences are expected to increasingly shift towards premium offerings, such as those with exotic taste and ingredient options, alongside attractive packaging (as is often seen in craft variants).
Over the forecast period, local, craft breweries are likely to pose a threat to well established international beer brands. Slovenia is becoming a gastronomic destination.
With the growing trend of microbreweries and consumption at home, new ways of beer brewing are also developing. Mobile breweries is one such example.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
