Spirits returned to volume growth in 2021, having experienced three consecutive years of decline including a sharp fall in sales in the previous year in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. In 2020, total volume sales of spirits witnessed double-digit decline due largely to the fall in on-trade sales brought about by the closure of bars, restaurants and other on-trade venues in March 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19, with disruption to these outlets continuing through most of the year.
Sales of vodka, which account for roughly 98% of all spirits, and brandy, which accounts for around 1.5%, saw off-trade decline in 2021 which dragged down the entire category.
Price growth acted as a significant impediment to the development of the spirits category in 2021. The end price for consumers was severely affected by the growing cost of raw materials and excise taxes, which were raised twice in 2021.
The ongoing health and wellness trend, which has been bolstered by the experiences of the COVID-19 crisis, is set to exert a growing influence across alcoholic drinks during the forecast period. However, spirits is likely to be amongst the most negatively impacted areas of alcoholic drinks.
The future of spirits in Uzbekistan is likely to remain highly reliant on the success of the government in combating illegal production of spirits. If digital labelling initiatives succeed in reducing the presence of illicit products, then this could help boost consumer confidence in the quality of the products they buy.
While, overall, spirits faces a challenging time, imported spirits categories such as rum, gin, and whiskies are expected to enjoy growth over the forecast period as consumers are becoming more open minded with regard to drinking culture and increasingly inclined to try new tastes and flavours. Outside of vodka and brandy, the other types of spirits offered in Uzbekistan are primarily liqueurs, dark and white rum, tequila (and mezcal), English gin, bourbon/other US whiskey and blended Scotch whisky.
