Spirits displayed robust total volume sales growth in 2021. However, this growth was not enough to compensate for the decline in sales observed in the previous year.

Thanks to its broad portfolio of popular brands that includes Ricard, Clan Campbell and Pastis 51, Jameson, Chivas, and Absolut, among many others, Ricard SA remained the leading player in spirits in 2021. After merging its Pernod and Ricard salesforces in July 2019, the company enjoyed the recovery of its flagship Ricard brand.
Despite the success of France’s vaccination programme, on-trade sales are expected to take some time to recover, with the negative impact on tourism and the emergence of the Omicron variant. With on-trade establishments expected to continue to face disruption, at least during the first months of 2022, the off-trade could benefit from consumers replenishing their supplies for home consumption.
France ranks amongst countries with the highest per capita consumption of whisky. While Bourbon will continue to remain the preferred type of whisky, Japanese whisky has been growing in popularity, as well as locally produced whisky.
Following the trend seen in other areas of alcoholic drinks in France, there is expected to be further growth in the relatively niche area of non-alcoholic spirits. As consumers have become more health conscious, they have been looking to reduce their alcohol intake while still enjoying the tastes and flavours of the spirits they enjoy, including using these products to make “mocktails” (non-alcoholic cocktails).
