Whisky has become a popular spirit in Peru over the review period for home consumption and in the on-trade. The pandemic led to a dramatic drop in volume sales in 2020, but demand remained strong in the off-trade helping to compensate.
The Pisco category has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic which has forced many producers to cease operations, close stores and/or stop exporting. New regulations brought in during 2019 have also made it more difficult and potentially more costly to produce Pisco, which is likely to have exacerbated weak performance.
The spirits category is projected to see total volume sales return to pre-pandemic levels in the second half of 2022. As the fight against COVID-19 progresses, on-trade volumes will rise steadily but will remain far below the levels seen in 2019.
