Spirits registered a recovery in 2021, with volume sales increasing by a fifth. However, with the virus still lingering and certain restrictions still in place, such as restrictions on opening hours for parts of the year, the pandemic still had an effect.
Second-placed Maraska, which is the largest distiller of traditional local spirits has been bought by one of the leading domestic distributors Stanic Group. Stanic has an extensive distribution network, but has been looking into getting production.
Imported brands in particular were affected by the closure of on-trade for much of 2020, as they are more dependent on this channel than local spirits such as liqueurs, bitters and rakija. In addition, many of the imported brands raise their profile by participating in public events.
Spirits will register healthy constant value growth over the forecast period, and will outperform both beer and wine. The full opening of society and return of foreign tourists will benefit spirits, as on-trade channel is a key distribution channel.
A bill has been proposed that will remove excise duty for small distillers for quantities that are earmarked for personal consumption. This is in part to align with EU systems.
Gin is expected to be the star performer over the forecast period. Croatia was late to catch on to the rising popularity of gin and as a result growth will be much stronger than in markets which saw early adoption.
