After a sharp decline in 2020, the spirits category managed to recover part of its volume sales loss, but totals were still far from the pre-pandemic levels. As with beer and wine, the spirits category is highly dependent on the on-trade.
Non-alcoholic spirits is a relatively new category in Portugal with a limited number of brands operating, including Seedlip and Ceder's. The two years of COVID-19 restrictions have limited product investments in this category.
Brands that are more dependent on the on-trade suffered over others that traditionally have a positive performance in the off-trade. One example is Pernod Ricard’s whisky brand Jameson that was heavily impacted by the closure of on-trade establishments in 2021.
Spirits are set to recover over the next years, boosted by a return to normal socialising and drinking patterns bringing much-needed custom back to the on-trade. The return of tourism levels to pre-pandemic levels will equally provide a boost to on-trade spirits consumption, although on-trade volume sales are not expected to reach the highs of 2019 in this forecast period.
The supply issues that affected the category during 2021 are expected to prevail in 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the weak on-trade performance has led to a reduction in stocks and supply restrictions.
It remains too early to state what the long-term future may hold for the non-alcohol and low-alcohol spirits category in Portugal since it is still in the early stages of development. Nonetheless, there is a clear appetite for spirits low in alcohol and calories but consumers are still seeking a superior drinking experience and flavour that can be very difficult to obtain in a 0% alcohol spirit.
