The consumption of spirits in Ecuador is closely associated with social contact and socialising. During the closure of universities and with people working from home during the pandemic, the consumption of spirits therefore recorded significant decline.
Before the pandemic, spirits sales were highly dependent on the on-trade channel, especially in discos, bars and nightclubs. These establishments have taken the longest to reopen following the pandemic, and it was not until the last quarter of 2021 that their operation was authorised in most of the country's cities.
Single malt Scotch whiskey has a very small market share in Ecuador compared with blended scotch whisky. However, in recent years, it has seen strong growth, mainly due to an increase in shelf space by different brands, such as The Glenlivet Founders Reserve and Glenfiddich 12 YO, which offer prices only slightly above blended brands including Johnnie Walker Black Label.
The tax reform that took effect in December 2021 will complicate the industry over the coming years. The tax has increased from USD7.
Younger consumers in Ecuador, such as millennials and centennials, increasingly prefer beverages with a low alcohol content and there is consequently increased migration from spirits to RTDs. RTDs also offer constant innovation in terms of flavours and concepts, more accessible prices, and benefit from being able to be drunk more easily.
Thanks to the successful vaccination programme launched in 2021, Ecuador will start 2022 with herd immunity that will allow the reopening of a large part of the on-trade channel. In addition, the resumption of meetings and social events will allow the category to recover, although the extent of the recovery remains uncertain due to new variants of COVID-19 that could arise in the future.
