Spirits consumption in the Dominican Republic is dominated by rum consumption; however, in 2021 the category was negatively impacted by the illegal use of empty bottles to sell counterfeit rum. Big efforts have been made to shut down the illegal market and to properly identify the product, but illegal sales of rum boomed during the first semester of 2021 due to its ultra-low prices.
Due to the long-lasting COVID-19 pandemic, the government applied a severe restriction policy until June 2021, which resulted in a significant change in consumer habits. Consumers were forced to stay in their homes, fuelling off-trade spirits sales with a strong switch from on-trade sales to retail stores, such as traditional grocery retailers called “colmados”.
Consumers in the Dominican Republic have become more knowledgeable and prefer to drink better-quality alcoholic drinks despite their higher prices. Whiskey had a good year in 2021 and the category is expected to continue growing.
The recovery of on-trade sales of spirits is expected over the forecast period. The curfew has been completely lifted and tourism is showing strong growth with a record number of visitors in October and a good prediction for the next few months as winter is considered high season for tourism in the Dominican Republic.
A certificate of origin (CO) for Dominican Republic rum was finally approved by ONAPI in November 2021 in order to diminish the future development of counterfeit rum. Additionally, rum bottles will need to display a security seal to guarantee the originality of the product.
More spirits options are expected to be available in the Dominican Republic over the course of the forecast period as people are increasingly knowledgeable about a variety of alcoholic drinks. English gin, for example, is gaining ground over vodka, and tequila is no longer limited to the main brands such as Jose Cuervo.
