Total volume sales of spirits witnessed a double-digit decline in total volume terms in 2020. This was largely due to the decline in on-trade sales brought about by the closure of bars, restaurants and other on-trade venues following the outbreak of COVID-19, with disruption to these outlets continuing through most of the year.
Although spirits recorded positive growth in 2021, volume sales were still down in both the on- and off-trade channels in comparison with their pre-COVID-19 levels. Whisky and vodka are by far the most commonly drunk spirits in Algeria and smuggled consumption remained significant in 2021 as consumers felt the financial pinch from COVID-19.
There was no change to the competitive landscape in 2021, with imported international brands in the top spot. Diageo Plc and Pernod Ricard, continued to be the leading players, accounting for about the half of spirits’ value shares in 2021.
Spirits will continue to develop over the forecast period to 2026 thanks to the expected increasing product availability and improving consumer awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the category’s different product areas, including emerging categories. The anticipated development of the horeca sector with multiple ongoing tourism investments in Algeria is also projected to drive higher demand over the course of the forecast period.
Spirits’ growth is, however, predicted to be impacted by the ongoing economy hardship in the country. This will continue to lead to rising complications in terms of import and logistics procedures and further devaluation of the Algerian dinar.
Whiskies, the most dominant product area within spirits in Algeria, will continue to shape the category over the forecast period, despite competition from other products such as vodka, as they enjoy strong popularity and will continue to appeal to consumers going forward. Driven by other blended scotch whisky, whiskies will continue to account for the lion’s share of sales and be the fastest growing category over the forecast period thanks to their better visibility and relative affordability compared with other types such as single malt whisky.
