In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, spirits will see volume decline in 2020 overall. The main reason for this has been due to the ongoing economic slowdown, deepened further by the COVID-19 impact, which is affecting living standards and disposable incomes.
The COVID-19 crisis further affected inflation and the devaluation of the Algerian dinar, leading to the rise of the import costs of spirits. The closure of hotels, restaurants and bars during lockdown also significantly affected the category’s performance in 2020.
Diageo Plc will maintain its lead in spirits in 2020 due to its wide product variety and in particular the strong popularity amongst Algerian consumers of its best-performing other blended scotch whisky brands Johnnie Walker and J&B. The positive trend recorded by whisky enabled Diageo Plc to consolidate its leading position.
Spirits will rebound immediately, however, a full recovery is not expected until later on in the forecast period. Still, positive demographic dynamics and improving consumer awareness about emerging spirits will contribute to the sales of spirits.
Positive demographics and improving consumer awareness and appreciation of different spirits categories is expected to continue, benefiting future sales. However, the predicted growth for spirits is set to be slower than the review period due to the ongoing negative economic conditions in Algeria, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the forecast period, whiskies will maintain its position as the largest product area within spirits, continuing to receive a boost by other blended Scotch whisky. Indeed, although Vodka will record an improvement compared to the review period, imposing a growing competition, whiskies will continue enjoying strong popularity in Algeria and therefore recording sustainable volume in 2021 and beyond.
