Spirits registered a decline in volume sales for the second year running, though the decline was not as severe as for wine and beer. The drop in volume sales was mainly due to increased smuggling activity, mainly from Argentina.
D&M Bolivia remained the clear leader in spirits in 2021, with well-known, premium offerings supporting its position, as well as its strong distribution across all channels. The player is also active in promoting its offerings at point-of-sale, in both the on- and off-trade.
Cocktail are increasing in popularity and in 2021, with society opening up, consumers were open to new experiences. Increasingly popular spirits include cocktails made with gin, a Moscou Mule cocktail with vodka, and the local cocktail Chufly with ginger ale and Singani.
Spirits will register healthy volume growth over the forecast period, with population growth supporting volume sales. Singani will continue to account for most volume sales and the leading spirits player, D&M Bolivia, will continue investing in innovation and extending its distribution in order to push volume sales.
While Singani will account for most volume sales, imported spirits will also register healthy volume growth, including premium whiskies. In 2021, distributor Elite Brands added Macellan whisky to its portfolio and there will be increased availability of other premium whiskies over the forecast period.
Rum will continue to be popular in Bolivia, with consumers attracted by its lower price than many other spirits. Promotion activity will also push volume sales, such as was done by AJ Vierci in 2021, when it offered a party pack of rum brand Flor de Caña, along with a bottle of coke.
