Total volume sales of spirits rebounded during 2021 but remained well below their pre-pandemic level. 2020 saw a shift in demand from the on-trade to the off-trade, and this was only partly reversed during 2021, as COVID-19 restrictions remained in force for much of the year.
Other Spirits are by far the most popular type of spirits in Romania. Romanians tend to be traditionalists when it comes to spirits, with rachiu/rakija and tzuica (plum brandy) and fruit liqueurs particularly popular.
Modern grocery retail chains like Carrefour and Lidl now dominate the distribution of spirits, but many local consumers (particularly those on lower incomes) buy local spirits directly from producers in the countryside or make their own. Only a small proportion of these micro-distillers are legally registered and pay taxes.
Total volume sales of spirts will continue to expand throughout the forecast period, returning to their pre-pandemic level as early as 2022. Unsurprisingly, on-trade volume sales will be much slower to recover than off-trade volume sales, with on-trade volume sales remaining below their pre-pandemic level until 2025.
Alexandrion Group Romania SRL is expected to retain its leadership position in spirits during the forecast period. It has a wide product offer and is presented in most categories with both domestic and imported brands.
International player Diageo Plc ranked a relatively lowly seventh in spirits in Romania during 2021, as its relatively expensive offerings were particularly hard hit by the pandemic during 2020 and only partially recovered in 2021. However, it is set to grow in importance during the forecast period.
