Local other spirit manufacturers and artisanal producers, such as Zizak, Marsen or Zufanek brands are gaining share in spirits thanks to the rising popularity of home-made drinks. Consumer demand has remained robust even with the absence of on-trade sales, where brands are typically available in upmarket pubs and restaurants.
Lower ABV spirits continue to attract Slovaks who drink less often, but prefer a higher quality alcohol. These are also more affordable thanks to lower excise taxes which impact many high strength spirits such as vodka.
Product innovation during the pandemic was less intensive when compared to 2019 or early 2020. However, a few interesting brands emerged in late 2020 and 2021 taking advantage of the pandemic.
Unannounced excise tax hikes may create further price instability over the forecast period, as the government looks to boost its financial reserves which have been depleted during the pandemic. In the past, excise taxes have been increased in cooperation with neighbouring markets to avoid massive changes to cross-border shopping, but this does not appear to be a factor now.
On-trade sales failed to bounce back during 2021 due to a five-month closure and further COVID-19 restrictions. As a result, on-trade spirits consumption will gradually improve its position over the forecast period although volumes will not hit pre-pandemic levels.
Premium spirits saw growing pressure in 2021 due to rising prices and this will remain a key issue in 2022 with inflation picking up pace and disposable incomes failing to keep pace. Price promotions and discounts will be sought after by many consumers, especially for higher quality spirits as consumers try to save money on non-essential products.
