Though not one of the hardest hit of beauty and personal care products in 2020, as a result of COVID-19, deodorant suffered current value and volume decline. With people going out less and engaging in less sport, they wore less deodorants.
With Ecuador’s climate warm and humid throughout the year, many consumers are very interested in deodorants with antiperspirant properties. Towards the end of the review period, there was a shift in consumer preferences towards deodorants with particularly strong antiperspirant characteristics offered under brands such as Speed Stick and Gillette.
One of key factors holding back the development of organic and more natural types of deodorants is that these products tend to have considerably higher prices than standard options, making them unaffordable for the majority of consumers. Thus, the widening offer of deodorants in 20-50g sachets on the shelves of traditional grocery retailers represents an effort on the part of brands such as Savital to widen demand.
Once society opens up again and people are going out working and socialising, value and volume sales of deodorants will recover. With the most pronounced growth expected in 2022, when it is hoped that COVID-19 will have been brought significantly under control.
Manufacturers will to focus on new scents, long-lasting fragrances, stain/mark prevention, anti-perspirant formulae, claims of increased efficacy and smoothing underarms to attract consumers. Growth will also be driven by products containing more natural ingredients, no aluminium-based compounds or parabens, and higher performance claims.
Towards the end of the review period, demand for organic and more natural types of deodorants began to increase among adult women and teenage girls. This is line with parallel trends in other beauty and personal care product areas.
