Roll-on deodorants continue to be the largest category in Ecuador and have recorded the greatest recovery during 2021. This is mainly due to the low value of each unit compared to both sprays and creams and their perception of being extremely effective.
After extensive closures in 2020, many companies returned to face-to-face work in 2021 and schools reopened at the end of the year. Social events and activities also resumed as society opened up again.
During the pandemic, many consumers switched to shopping in modern channels as traditional stores experienced greater opening problems, plus Ecuadorians were looking for a wider range of products under one roof so they did not have to leave their homes as often. This development was reversed in 2021 and the distribution of products returned to normal during the course of the year.
COVID-19 hit Ecuador during a time of social disturbance and economic problems, which were exacerbated by the lockdowns. Many people have lost their jobs and the economic structural problem, with rigid hiring laws, limits the reduction of unemployment in the country.
With the return to life outside the home and people going out working and socialising again, deodorant consumption is expected to return to normal going forward. During the pandemic, with people going out less and engaging in less sport, they wore less deodorants and sales suffered accordingly.
Consumer demand for products containing natural ingredients is expected to continue to be strong in the forecast period with the introduction of more products such as Rexona Zero. It will, however, remain a relatively small market compared to regular deodorant options that are usually cheaper.
