International players continued to lead in deodorants during 2021 due to their long-standing presence in the country and high levels of consumer awareness. Unilever retained the leadership position, followed by Beiersdorf, Lascad Ushuaia and The Gillette Co.
One of the must have products for direct sellers in Cameroon are deodorants. With the resumption of activities post pandemic, these direct sellers were again very active making door-to-door sales.
The outlook for deodorants is very positive, with healthy constant value growth predicted. Value sales will be supported by an increasing population, as well as the continued use of deodorants as a more affordable substitute for fragrances.
Cameroon already has a hot, humid climate, but global warming is driving temperatures even higher. Though a worrying development, this bodes well for deodorants, as consumers look to remain fresh in the hot, sticky temperatures.
In 2021, excise duties of 50% on locally manufactured cosmetics were removed in order to boost local production. This should bolster local manufacturers over the forecast period, as they will be even more competitively priced compared with imported brands.
