After a negative 2020 when home seclusion discouraged the consumption of deodorants, sales returned to a positive trajectory in Greece in 2021, as was the case before the COVID-19 crisis. The lockdown/restrictive measures (staying inside, working from home, and the closure of restaurants/cafés/entertainment venues) limited the usage occasions of many beauty and personal care products, deodorants included.
In the Greek deodorants market, 2021 saw the continuation of consumer trends favouring “natural” or “green” products that are friendly towards the skin and the environment. Consumers showed an increasing preference for products that do not contain alcohol or aluminium, choosing more “neutral” ones, with more discreet scent (or no scent at all), that provide more natural protection to their skin.
Deodorants remains a market driven by innovation. New launches from key players have continued despite the pandemic, responding to current consumer trends.
As is becoming evident from the second half of 2021, deodorants witnessed only a temporary setback due to the pandemic. Sales are expected to recover and get back on a positive growth course over the forecast period.
The consumer demand for more “natural” or “green” products, free of (actual or perceived) harmful substances will continue driving developments in deodorants, and consumers will place increasing emphasis on skin-friendly formulations, alongside their demand for product effectiveness. Thus, gentler, more neutral products will prevail, while the concern about the impact of spray usage on the environment will cause deodorant spray sales to lag behind those of roll-ons, and even start to decline in the later part of the forecast period.
The return to normality post-pandemic will not, however, be without problems. The economic repercussions of the pandemic, along with a recent wave of price increases for energy and basic goods, will take their toll on the disposable income of Greek consumers, causing them to be more price-sensitive and, hence, less brand-loyal.
