2021 was the year when consumers started to return to civilisation beyond the lockdowns of 2020 and once again started to engage in social activity. This has resulted in more robust sales for the category, following the drop seen in 2020, as consumers want to smell fresh and pleasant while they are out and about, at work or socialising.
The category is dominated by mass production, with consumers trusting worldwide known brands such as Rexona, Garnier and Nivea. Within this, even the problem-solving pharmaceutical//prescription antiperspirants have not, so far, gained the attention of the majority of consumers.
Deodorant sprays remain the most popular deodorant format in Azerbaijan. Whilst sales of other, more Western formats, such as roll-ons demonstrate faster growth than sprays, sprays remain the preferred option for domestic consumers – somewhat bucking the trend for following global patterns in beauty and personal care, where sprays are often phased out as being bad for the environment.
Deodorants in Azerbaijan is a category which is still far from saturation, especially when it comes to the formats and functionality of products. In addition, some more consumers in rural areas remain an additional opportunity for the future expansion of sales, as the habit of using deodorants is slowly making inroads within communities living in rural areas.
Despite no notable uptake in the more modern and Western formats over the traditional sprays, an organic shift towards roll-ons and sticks is expected over the forecast period. Not necessarily due to consumer awareness or personal choice, but due to the product policies of the major global manufacturers, who are moving away from spray formats due to environmental concerns and production costs.
Changes to the competitive environment are not expected over the forecast period. Deodorants will remain dominated by mass products from large global players offering recognised brands which consumers trust.
