Deodorants were negatively impacted by the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, as with people spending significant amounts of time at home and not participating in activities such as sport, there was less demand for deodorants. In 2021, with society gradually opening up, deodorants registered healthy current value growth and volume growth.
Beiersdorf passed out Unilever in 2021, thanks to the continuing popularity of its Nivea brand.
Roll-ons are driving the value growth, though sprays are the leading format. Sprays are still among the cheapest deodorants available and there is a wide range of offerings.
Deodorants will register moderate constant value growth in what is a mature product area. In order to differentiate, manufacturers will focus on various different benefits to stimulate growth such as new scents, long-lasting fragrances, stain/mark prevention, anti-perspirant formulae and claims of increased efficacy.
There is expected to be growing demand for deodorants with natural ingredients over the forecast period and with no aluminium-based compounds or parabens. One such brand that is certified organic and vegan is Slovenian brand Nelipot.
Hypermarkets and supermarkets are still projected to remain the leading channels. The habit of shopping in specialised stores for personal care products will continue to decline, as it is time consuming.
