From a low base, deodorant creams was the best performer in 2021, given the fact that most formulations already available in Slovakia have natural ingredients and provide rather good protection, not just against sweat but also against odour. Deodorant creams are growing in popularity as consumers seek more natural deodorants and an alternative to deodorants that contain aluminium.
In 2020, demand for deodorant pumps proved to be relatively robust, as some consumers used them as a cheap substitute for fragrances. However, in 2021, despite sales holding well after the start of the pandemic, deodorant pumps saw a drop in sales, negatively impacted by consumers opting for fragrances to treat themselves, having spent long periods under COVID-19-related restrictions.
Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Henkel and Beiersdorf have strong portfolios of well-known brands. All keep track of fast-moving innovation in terms of packaging and ingredients, which helps them to sustain their sales.
Sales of deodorants are expected to return to overall positive growth during the forecast period. As the threat posed by COVID-19 starts to diminish and daily life gradually returns to normal, consumers will spend less time at home and return to their places of work or study in growing numbers.
The distribution of deodorants will remain highly concentrated around supermarkets/hypermarkets with increasing value channelled through drugstores/parapharmacies and, more recently emerging, discounters. Both drugstore chains and discounters benefit from rapid store expansion in Slovakia.
The demand for aluminium-free deodorants and more natural solutions that contain no or at least fewer chemicals keeps growing. The growth in demand for these products has been fuelled by social media and bloggers.
