Cider/perry registered an increase in volume sales in 2021, as more socialising and family celebrations supported volume sales. Cider/perry is in line with strengthening consumer trends for lighter, low ABV drinks with fruity flavours, and as result, consumer interest is increasing, particularly among women.
The Argentinean brand, Del Valle, distributed by Bodegas Del Valle, continued to dominate cider/perry in Bolivia in total volume terms in 2021. The player has strong distribution across traditional and modern stores, and due to its affordable price, Del Valle has become the most popular cider in the country.
Consumption of cider is highly concentrated around special occasions such as Christmas and New Year. The sweetness of cider pairs well with the traditional bread, panettone, which is widely consumed at this time of year.
Domestic brands could potentially gain value share over the forecast period. Vinos La Victoria, the domestic wine producer, released its Del Valle de Tarija cider in 2019.
Players will look to expand consumption of cider beyond the Christmas and New Year holidays. With this in mind, distributor CGI Boliviana recently released a cider in a can format, which would make cider consumption more suitable for events such as barbecues.
There will be increased offering of premium brands of cider over the forecast period and this should interest higher income consumers. For example, the hypermarket chain Ketal stocks imported European brands such as Kingstone Press, Strongbow, Stella Artois, Thatchers and Weston’s.
