Off-trade volume sales of cider/perry continued to exhibit double-digit growth during 2021. Demand was boosted by the fact that COVID-19 restrictions continued to restrict the cross-border trade with neighbouring Sweden.
Demand for cider is being supported by regular new product development and the shift from the likes of spirits to lower ABV beverages, such as cider. For example, Grevens Coco and Pineapple was launched in 2020.
The biggest companies within cider in Norway, Hansa Borg Bryggerier and Ringnes saw limited impact on their financial standing from COVID-19, as they have a large share of volume sales through grocery retailers, thus maintaining stable revenues, as consumption shifted from the on-trade to the off-trade. Most severely affected were companies with a large share of revenue through the on-trade channel, such as distributors of premium imported cider brands with very limited off-trade distribution.
Off-trade volume sales of cider/perry will decline for the first time in seven years during 2022, as the easing of COVID-19 restrictions leads to a strong rebound in cross-border trade. However, off-trade volume sales will recover during subsequent years, exhibiting an increase across the forecast period as a whole.
Locally brewed cider/perry is set to grow in popularity during the forecast period, as brands proliferate. Some of these local brands have been begun to export their offerings.
Growth in demand for cider will continue to be supported by product innovation and the shift to lower ABV beverages in general. The health and wellness trend, which is expected to outlast the pandemic, will remain key to this.
