In 2021, cider/perry registered further volume decline. Cider is losing popularity to other alcoholic offerings such as hard seltzers and other RTDs which offer similar benefits and are seen to be much more dynamic in terms of innovation.
Private label has a relatively strong position in cider/perry, generating almost a quarter of total volume sales. The unit prices of private label products are substantially lower than those of branded products and that is their main selling point.
Despite the doom and gloom within cider/perry, there were some products launches in 2021. One being Hartwall’s Guilty Joe Dry Rosé Apple Cider, as the company looked to leverage the increasing popularity of rosé wine to attract increased consumer interest in cider.
The outlook is bleak for cider/perry over the forecast period, with volume sales expected to fall. Also, the expected increase in private imports over the forecast period, as people resume travel to for instance Estonia, where cider/perry is much more affordable, will dampen volume sales.
There is a growth opportunity for more premium, local cider, made from apples instead of apple juice and in 2021, an association was formed called Suomen Aidon Siiderin Tuottajien Liitto (Finnish Real Cider Producers’ Association), to promote local cider. It is hoped that by these small cider players coming together, they can pool their resources and reach shop shelves more efficiently.
Sales will remain negative as volumes are expected to continue to migrate to RTDs. This overall trend is likely to slow down new product development in cider/perry.
