Cider/perry was hit hard by closures of on-trade channels and a very weak tourist season in the previous year, due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. These negative factors were particularly significant for cider/perry, as on-trade channels and tourism are the category’s strongest growth drivers.
A significant portion of cider sales in Slovenia are still localised and sold traditionally as a side product of orchards and vineyards, which promotes bio- and eco-production and the organic trend, with no added sugars or preservatives. As such, cider offering such characteristics remains important to Slovenian consumers.
Carlsberg A/S maintained its strong lead in cider/perry in 2021, in both value and volume terms. The player’s Somersby brand also holds a strong lead in brand terms, with no close contesters.
The on-trade channel is expected to recover more fully in 2022. Within this return to pre-pandemic lifestyles, cider/perry is tipped to see a strong bounce back and steady, albeit lower, growth over the forecast period.
Linked to the above-mentioned consumer switch to lower-alcohol drinks, health and wellness trends are expected to intensify over the forecast period, with cider producers and importers both seeking to lower the sugar content and add functional properties (as seen with fortified beer variants, for example). This trend also looks set to benefit domestic producers who sell cider as a side-line to their apple orchards, thus being well-positioned as leaders in organic, sustainable and natural trends.
Another trend in cider which is expected to become increasingly popular over the forecast period is that for exotic flavours. Brands which successfully launch or expand their portfolios with attractive and fruity flavour offerings are expected to gain a significant advantage over those which simply offer the traditional tastes.
