Cider/perry total volume sales continued to decline in 2021, with falling sales seen both on-trade and off-trade. The decline had been seen throughout the review period.
With demand for cider/perry in Poland under severe pressure, players hope that the emergence of a strong craft cider trend, as in beer, could have the potential to revolutionise the category’s image and open up the consumption of cider/perry to a wider audience, including younger consumers. Towards the end of the review period, a number of local craft producers emerged, focusing on the development and marketing of their brands in their local regions.
Ambra remained the leader in cider/perry in total volume terms in 2021, and even saw a strong increase in its share, making it the dominant player. Its Cydr Lubelski brand also remained the leading brand and is still the most recognised cider, with widespread availability.
Cider/perry is expected to continue to see slowing total volume declines throughout the forecast period. Producing cider in Poland is expensive, and such products are therefore much more expensive than beer, whilst beer can also be promoted in the media and cider cannot.
Some cider/perry brands focused mostly on on-trade sales, thus the lockdowns and the cancellation of summer events contributed to strong decline in 2021. Cider brands are already slowly disappearing from restaurant and pub menus, whilst there is also a big question mark over how many on-trade outlets will survive after the supposedly temporary COVID-19 closures.
In 2022, the Croatian government introduced a new legislation to support small producers and the local production of high-quality alcoholic drinks. The legislation currently applies to grape wine production, but it is anticipated to be extended to fruit wine, mead and cider production.
