With ice cream sales recovered from the pandemic, retail volume sales will be stagnant over the forecast period, with only marginal value growth expected year on year. The high seasonality of demand is something that players in this environment will need to overcome to achieve a greater and more consistent performance.
Positive value growth for ice cream will benefit from product developments and innovation. As well as launches aligned to the growing health and wellness trend, such as low sugar, low calories, natural ingredients and low fat, dietary requirements will also be addressed, with players focusing on protein ice cream, vegan ice cream and gluten-free options.
Lidl’s impact will be felt in the ice cream category as in many other food categories. The discounter is expected to expand across the country during the forecast period following its initial launch in October 2021.
