Retail constant value sales of ice cream will begin to expand again in 2023, with robust growth expected throughout the forecast period. Even as the risk posed by Covid-19 continues to fade, local consumers will continue to be attracted by products they perceive as healthier, so innovation is expected to focus on this area.
With vegan diets growing in popularity, particularly among younger consumers, plant-based ice cream is expected to see strong growth in demand during the forecast period. Demand for these products will expand beyond vegans to include vegetarians and flexitarians, as well as the lactose intolerant and mainstream consumers seeking a healthier alternative to traditional ice cream.
While supermarkets remain the leading distribution channel for ice cream, discounters (mainly Lidl and Aldi) will continue to gain ground on them during the forecast period, especially in bulk ice cream. Lidl and Aldi are both steadily expanding their store networks in Spain, with the latter planning to open 50 new outlets in Spain during 2022, bringing the total to more than 400.
