Unilever is planning on closing down its Sipoo ice cream factory in Finland and moving production, possibly to Sweden. Since 2016, the total production of ice cream at the Sipoo factory has declined by 50%.
Domestic origin is increasingly being emphasised by ice cream manufacturers, not only because it supports the local economy, but also because it is seen as more sustainable at a time of growing consumer environmental awareness. For example, the domestic player, Suomen Jäätelö stresses that its ice cream is made using dairy ingredients from Suomenkarja (Finncattle), local dairy cow breeds.
The health and wellness trend is set to exert a growing influence on consumer demand and manufacturer product innovation in ice cream in the forecast period. Froneri Finland is launching two low in sugar ice creams under its Pingviini brand.
