Overall inflation in Chile reached its highest point mid-2022 (14% annual rate) and has been declining ever since (down to 8% in mid-2023), according to the official Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by Chile’s National Statistics Institute (INE). However, the Ice Cream Price Index showed significantly different behaviour, peaking at 16% three months after that of the overall CPI.
Larger players, such as Nestlé, Coca-Cola de Chile, and Empresas Carozzi, with strong participation and longstanding brands in many snack (and non-snack) categories, are attempting to extend their reach. This is an effective strategy to introduce a new product from one category (such as ice cream), by using a brand that is already familiar to consumers and strongly positioned in their minds, to another (such as sweet biscuits or chocolate confectionery) or vice versa.
Innovation within ice cream is likely to continue, competition is fierce, and many local consumers still appreciate ice cream as a treat. However, as a perceived non-essential product linked to indulgence and impulse, the future of ice cream, like many other snack categories, is highly dependent on consumers’ real disposable incomes, which are linked to the country’s macroeconomic future.
