Bleach sees a boost from COVID-19 in 2020, due to consumers’ higher standards of home hygiene and frequency of cleaning. Bleach, in particular, is a traditionally known disinfectant in Uzbekistan, which used to be a popular product seen as being essential in homecare.
Bleach is, however, likely to see ongoing competition from alternative products such as colour safe laundry bleach and toilet liquids, for example. This will, however, be restricted to the smaller base of higher-income consumers in big cities.
Unilever Group maintains its lead in bleach in 2020, thanks to its top Domestos brand. The brand is followed by The Procter & Gamble Co’s Ace brand, which held the lead until 2017-2018 when it lost shares to Domestos.
As briefly noted, sales of bleach are expected to decline again from 2021, once the COVID-19-related spike in popularity fades again. This is for the same drivers which were causing bleach to lose popularity in the review period, along with the growing prevalence of cheap alternative in toilet care and surface care (especially multi-purpose cleaners) which are less harmful than bleach.
It is, however, expected that bleach will maintain a consumer base of lower-income consumers in rural areas, who have lower consumer spending power and adhere to more traditional methods of cleaning over using more modern products. Therefore, there are opportunities for domestic companies to increase their volume sales within this consumer group, although value sales will be restricted by the lower unit prices.
Over the longer-term forecast period, the gradual growth in the country’s economy (from 2025) will also start to support a stronger level of consumer spending power. This will enable a number of consumers to shift out of bleach and into alternative surface care products.
