While the rising cost of living will mean that, in many cases, people need to cut consumption, wound care is unlikely to suffer as a result. For example, as of July 2022, a pack of 20 (or more!) plasters in Apoteket’s webstore could cost less than SEK20, price levels more or less the same as in grocery retailer, Coop’s webstore.
It is hard for companies to introduce totally new, “revolutionary” types of products in wound care, which tends to intensify pricing competition, as there is less capacity for differentiation through innovation. Moreover, the strength of established brands, particularly Salvequick, poses a notable challenge to the development of new brands looking to make breakthroughs.
In many cases, wound care products are bought in preparation for going on holiday, to a summer cottage, and so on, while in other cases the product is bought when needed. In the former case, e-commerce, hypermarkets (weekly grocery shopping) and pharmacies (wound care bought at the same time as going to the pharmacy anyway for something else, such as Rx or OTC drugs) are set to benefit.
