COVID-19 and its far-reaching effects will hit wound care sales hard in 2020. Although some households stocked up on gauze, tape and other wound care at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it the only category to post positive growth in 2020, this growth was marginal and consumers are likely to use up excess reserves before buying more, dampening sales in the future.
The leading player in wound care remains Hartmann-Rico due to its strong brand awareness and affordable distribution networks. The company is usually particularly strong in first aid kits, where it offers the very popular Hartmann brand.
There is a large gap in value share between leading company Hartmann-Rico and second placed 3M (East) AG. Indeed, the latter only operates in sticking plasters/adhesive bandages, offering just one brand, Spofaplast.
While wound care value sales are predicted to continue to increase, volume sales are expected to stagnate. This can be attributed to the impact of rising prices and increasing investment in higher quality products.
Sticking plasters/adhesive bandages will remain the largest wound care category, already accounting for more than half of total value sales. Slovak consumers traditionally have these products at hand in their households in case of urgent need, with rising disposable incomes fuelling a shift towards better quality sticking plasters/adhesive bandages.
Wound care is only expected to see limited value and volume growth over the forecast period due to two main factors. Firstly, interest in first aid kits is expected to be limited as purchases are increasingly postponed until consumers buy a new car.
