Demand for bottled water had been growing steadily in Chile up until 2020 when the pandemic hit and sales through off-trade stagnated while declining through the on-trade channel due to foodservice closures as a result of lockdowns. 2021 is looking to be a more positive year for the category, as the country reopens and demand improves through both channels.
Flavoured bottled water continues to gain in popularity due to the emergence of different flavours and brands which aim to attract Chileans who are looking to avoid sugary drinks and increase their intake of water, while at the same time appreciating the indulgent fruit flavours. Chile has one of the highest per capita consumption rates of soft drinks globally, but consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of their content in terms of sugar and calories, and therefore major players such as Coca-Cola aim to drive these customers towards healthier alternatives within their portfolios, such as flavoured bottled water, in order to gain greater share in categories where they are not leaders.
Aguas CCU - Nestlé Chile is set to maintain its strong leadership of bottled water in off-trade value share terms in 2021, with its Cachantun and Nestlé Pure Life brands amongst others, followed by Coca-Cola de Chile with Vital and Benedictino. However, the leader is gradually losing off-trade value and volume share, while Coca-Cola is starting to regain lost ground, while sustaining its dominance of still flavoured bottled water.
Bottled water players are looking to drive up volume sales by promoting the trend of big bottles that began in 2020, especially after the popularisation of e-commerce. Online orders of bottled water can be delivered directly to consumers’ homes, which allows families to make carefully planned purchases while saving money by ordering bulk quantities in addition to appreciating the convenience of not having to transport heavy bottles home from a grocery retailer.
Bottled water has performed well in Chile over the years, and as the threat of the pandemic wanes, the category is projected to enjoy steady growth over the forecast period as consumers spend longer periods of time outside of the home. Pre-pandemic, double-digit growth was common over the review period, while the forecast period is predicted to record stable single-digit growth rates.
Flavoured bottled water offers further potential for growth and expansion in Chile over the forecast period. It is considered a healthy product, as it contains no added sugar, and many brands are paying close attention to this premium segment and how to make it more accessible.
