A slight decline has been seen in total volume sales of bottled water in 2020. On-trade sales have plummeted, affected by the closure of foodservice outlets to try and stop the spread of COVID-19, and capacity restrictions on reopening.
Premium brands recently entered the Chilean market, including SmartWater, Voss, San Pellegrino and others, and initially they performed well, especially in the on-trade channel, although from a low base. However, in 2019 during the protests and 2020 during COVID-19, the consumption of mass products increased, whilst the premium segment contracted.
Aguas CCU - Nestlé Chile has maintained its strong lead in bottled water in off-trade value terms in 2020, with its Cachantun and Nestlé Pure Life brands, amongst others, followed by Coca-Cola de Chile with Vital and Benedictino, amongst others. However, both these players have seen off-trade value share declines in 2020.
