As the health and wellness trend continues to raise greater awareness among Dominican consumers, bottled water will see robust volume growth over the forecast period. Climate change is affecting the country in profound ways, with higher temperatures and longer periods of intense heat, coupled with greater precipitation and humidity levels.
Further private label developments are anticipated in flavoured waters in the coming years, specifically within the modern channel. As larger retailers, including modern grocers, expand across the country and pursue more aggressive strategies, private label ranges will also expand.
Access to potable water continues to be a challenge in the Dominican Republic, with around 89% of the urban population purchasing bottled water as their main source of potable water compared to 68% of the rural population. Recent results from the ENHOGAR-2021 (Encuesta Nacional de Hogares de Propósitos Múltiples) published by the National Statistics Office (ONE) in May 2022 finds that just over half of Dominicans receive water inside their dwellings but services can be irregular and limited.

Bottled Water
This category is the aggregation of still bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), carbonated bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), flavoured bottled water and functional bottled water. Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
